For the First Time in Four Decades, Chile Does not Commemorate the Coup Against Allende

Green Social Thought
3 weeks 2 days ago

by from Santiago Chile

Chile’s far-right President, José Antonio Kast, ignored the 53rd anniversary of the September 11, 1973, coup d’état, when General Augusto Pinochet (1915–2006) overthrew the government of Salvador Allende (1970–1973).

Deported Cubans: The Silence of the Lambs

Green Social Thought
3 weeks 2 days ago

by Raúl Antonio Capote

As detentions of Cubans in the United States increase, the voices most critical of Havana remain silent; no politician—and almost none of the so-called influencers—is speaking out to denounce the abuse. Most Cubans detained and deported to third countries did not cross the border illegally; their entry was, at the time, legal and authorized by U.S. authorities.

Colombia’s withdrawal of intervention does not affect South Africa v. Israel case or obligations under Genocide Convention

Green Social Thought

by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor

Colombia’s decision to withdraw its intervention in South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice does not affect the proceedings, South Africa’s arguments or the Court’s jurisdiction, according to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. The organisation explains that Colombia was an intervening state under Article 63 of the ICJ Statute, not the applicant, and therefore could not halt or withdraw the case itself. The article also examines Colombia’s continuing obligations under the Genocide Convention, including the duty to prevent and punish genocide. It calls on states to support international accountability efforts and uphold the independence of the Court.

Greenland Is Not for Sale: Trump’s Donroe Doctrine and US Imperialism

Green Social Thought
3 weeks 2 days ago

by Vijay Prashad

Trump’s campaign to bring Greenland under US control is presented as a national-security project, but Greenlanders have overwhelmingly rejected joining the United States. Vijay Prashad examines the island’s strategic importance, the extensive US military presence already established there, and the historical costs borne by Greenlanders. The article places Trump’s demands within the broader framework of the Monroe Doctrine and its modern “Donroe Doctrine” formulation, linking Greenland to Washington’s wider hemispheric ambitions. It also traces Greenland’s struggle for self-government and independence, arguing that strategic interests, mineral resources and military geography cannot override the political rights and self-determination of Greenland’s people.

Trump’s Politically Driven Deportations Are Quietly Rising

Donald Trump’s street-level ICE surges and deportation obsession are wildly unpopular. That isn’t stopping the administration from continuing to target noncitizens over constitutionally protected free speech, including green card holders.

ALTADENA, Calif.—Sylvie Andrews walks among the brilliant white poppies, purple California grapes and olive-green thorns surrounding her yard’s blackened pizza oven—one of the only things that survived last year’s devastating Eaton Fire. But her eyes scan the block beyond, ever-aware of changes to her neighborhood.  Andrews says virtually all of her neighbors have received unsolicited […]

A Colorado Water Trial Could Decide the Future of an Agricultural Valley

Inside Climate News
3 weeks 3 days ago
Water regulators and farmers in Colorado’s San Luis Valley are in a lose-lose situation. Either they adopt a plan to aggressively manage the use of groundwater from their rapidly declining aquifer, likely forcing a contraction of the local agricultural economy, or continue overpumping and further lower the water table, which will likely force mass shutoffs […]

Bernie Sanders’s 2016 Campaign Lit a Spark Beyond Elections

Electoral campaigns can feed workplace struggle by politicizing people, raising their expectations, bringing activists together, and giving them experience organizing others. Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaigns did all four.
